About me
My Story
I'm Garry Aldridge
I went from a YTS scheme mechanic, to business coach, entrepreneur and on-line trainer for Tony Robins and Dean Graziosi. A 20 year journey of transition and transformation.
At the age of 35 years old, I left the UK and moved to Spain, From the age of 16 and leaving leaving school and up to this point I had been a mechanic. On arrival to Spain I wanted to start over and reinvent myself.
I found a job listed in the local English newspaper advertising for sales people, and although this was completely new to me and scary, I decided to go for the job. After the interview process they offered me the position and I accepted it.
A short nine months of selling and learning my craft, I was promoted to manager. So far so good! I had even discovered the “law of attraction” in action, (the secret) but I didn’t know this yet.
For the first time in my life I felt that I was able to do something that helped others and businesses. It was also very fulfilling to help other people become successful.
The people I worked with were unlike any other I had encountered before, I wanted to be just like them, especially one of the managers who I became very close to. He was my mentor, coach and friend.
The work was interesting and fun, the clients were from all walks of life, and the lifestyle was amazing.
It sounds like a dream right? As I write this I can remember how difficult it had been to get to that point. Its wasn’t all sunshine and roses.
Lets back up…
The sales job was commission only, in other words, no basic pay. Being brand new to sales I was struggling to pay rent! I also had a burning desire to be at least as good as the other sales people, if not better!
To improve, I stayed up late at night and re-wrote the sales scripts, sometimes all night. I researched sales gurus and tips and tricks on selling and overcoming objections.
I searched the internet, sales manuals and books on overcoming fear and procrastination. I researched anything and everything to do with sales including who to follow. This was heavy duty stuff but it had a massive impact on my performance. In fact, I became the top selling salesman and achieved the highest accolade in the industry, (the 5* award) and was promoted to manger. It felt like a dream come true, I thought I had made it! However, all is not what it seems….
Shortly after my promotion to manager I quickly realised that other people weren’t me, they weren’t as driven as I was, they didn’t seem to care as much as I did. They would only do just enough to get the job done! No extra mile. They would only do what they had to do because they had to do it, and not because they wanted to do it. I couldn’t believe it, my expectations of being a manager were smashed! I thought being a manager would be the equivalent of having 10 of me running around, it was actually like having a reluctant bunch of sloths that weren’t interested in performance or growth, or even pride in the job they did.
I felt like quitting! I actually know managers who have quit or stood down which is the same thing I guess.
Back to the drawing board! I had mastered the sales process, techniques and mindset to be a great salesman for myself, however, I had no idea how to be a manager or how to motivate and inspire others to be their best selves.
The last part of my story has taken me years to understand and perfect. Finding the answer, the secret to getting the best out of people is counter-intuitive. I was looking in all the wrong places. I realised that it matters not how much a team member knows or even how good they are, its how driven, motivated and inspired to succeed they are that counts. Even though I had some fantastic results with my teams over the years, my breakthrough came when I realised that people perform much better when they are happy. People need support. Coaching is supporting.
